Behind the Fog

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I love the Pacific Northwest.

The way the air smells

The towering fir trees.

How green and alive everything is.

It's all beautiful.

But there's one place in Washington State that I love more than any other.

A place that fills my heart every time I visit.

I think most of us have a place like that.

A place where, even when we aren't able to see it, can bring us joy just by closing our eyes and remembering it.

For me, that place is Mt. Rainier National Park.

I could stare at that mountain for days if I had the time.

This trip, our visit to the park was cool and foggy. The mountain was hiding.

On a clear day, when you pull into the parking lot at Paradise Point, the mountain greets you.

It's almost a spiritual experience.

One that makes you realize how small you are in this giant universe.

Our lives can get so complicated, chaotic, frustrating, scary even.

In those moments, it's hard to remember the people and places that make us happy.

The joy hides behind the fog in our brains.

But it's there. Just a memory away.

When we were on that mountain and the fog was so thick, I was a little disappointed at first.

But then I closed my eyes.

Took a deep breath and imagined all of the times I had been there.

When I opened them, the fog was just as thick.

I still couldn't see her. But I knew she was there.

Because I had experienced it, been there in real life.

I had that bank of memories to fall back on.

This is why it's so important to spend time with people you love, in places that are special to you.

Build your own bank of memories.

So you can cash in on them when life gets messy.

And have faith in the knowledge that there are always good things waiting for you.

Just behind the fog.
