A few weeks ago, on my way to work, I rounded a bend and the view took my breath away. I was so struck by it that I had to stop and take a picture.
But of course the picture that my iPhone captured was nowhere near as spectacular as the real thing. I swear the sun was 10 times as big in real life!
Isn't that how it generally goes though?
The view we see with our very own eyes can never truly be replicated in a photograph.
In fact, it can't even be replicated by another human being. No one sees the world in exactly the same way we individually do.
Our life experience, perspective and mindset at any given moment all have an influence.
That morning, when I rounded the bend, I could have been focused on how cold it was, or how long it was taking me to drive to work, or even that stupid car that was holding me up because it turned the other way and didn't have it's blinker on.
Any of those things could have changed the way I saw that view.
But instead, I'd been listening to an audio book that made me feel confident. I was optimistic that my day would go well.
In fact, I think that's the day I was going to be caroling at work. One of my favorite days of the year.
So what struck me when I rounded that curve was the brilliant orange of the sunrise, the peaceful rolling hills and trees that made up the backdrop, and the fact that the road was empty of traffic so I could stop and capture the view.
Life really is all about perspective.
In just a few short days, we'll mark the end of another year.
The end of another decade in fact. Closing another chapter.
I think back on all of the twists and turns that I navigated in 2019. And how many times I was struck by the view.
Sometimes the view was really good.
Sometimes it was not so good.
But always it had something to teach me.
So I guess I am ready for 2020. Go ahead, bring it on! The good, the bad and the ugly.
Let's see what life has in store around the bend.
Happy New Year!
