I picked up this cup at Goodwill the other day.
I didn't need any more cups.
But it spoke to me.
It made me pause and think about all of the things I do every day because I have to... because that's what comes with being an "adult."
I looked it up in the dictionary and there is a formal definition of this word:
It really is hard.
To remember all the details, to do everything in the right order, to meet all the deadlines.
To be on time for all the meetings, to bring the treats to school, to get the kids to all of their activities.
To schedule all of the appointments, to pay all the bills.
To feel like we are doing everything we should, for everyone we should, and as well as we should.
That's a lot of pressure.
And exactly why companies make cups like this so we can commiserate while we drink our water or coffee or (insert your favorite alcoholic beverage here).
It's also why it's so easy to feel like life isn't very much fun anymore.
We let the days go by and deal with all the mundane stuff.
And somewhere along the way, we forget to make time to laugh and enjoy life.
I think we just have to make that part of our tasks when adulting.
Schedule time for fun - literally add that to the list of things to do.
The scheduling part is sometimes the hardest. But putting it on the calendar makes it much more likely to happen.
And it's always worth it.
Here's a short list of ideas to get you thinking:
A night out with your best friends where you laugh until your cheeks hurt.
A family poker game.
A drive around the neighborhood to see the holiday lights.
A visit to the playground to swing on the swings (yes, you can still do that!)
A trip to a new venue with live music where you can dance and sing.
Add your favorites to this list - the stuff that makes you laugh, that makes you smile, that makes you remember that there is so much joy in life.
Adulting is hard. Always will be.
But it doesn't have to suck the fun out of everything.
Don't let it.
I'll meet you on the playground...
