Have a Seat

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

A crisp fall morning.

An invigorating run around a beautiful lake.

A peaceful place to sit and enjoy the view.

I could almost hear these chairs calling to me as I ran past them yesterday.

"Have a seat...you know you want to!"

And I did.  Want to, that is.

It was such a beautiful morning.  Sitting in those chairs, just staring at the lake would have been wonderfully peaceful.

But I resisted.  And stayed on my path.

I finished the run I had set out to complete and felt pride in it.

Life is like that.  A lot actually.

The path of least resistance calls to us on a regular basis.

It's so much easier to take the road with less obstacles, to stay in our comfort zones, to not do the tough things it takes to truly be who we are meant to be in life.

But, I'm realizing more and more these days that there's truth in the fact that the only constant in life is change.

If we always take a back seat and just watch as life goes by us, we could wake up one day and notice that things have changed so much that we don't even know who we are anymore.

Or perhaps we never really did?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying to never take a day off or not to relax and be present.

But know which way you are headed.  And go there with purpose.

Stay the course, no matter how often those proverbial "chairs" call out to you to sit down, or try to tell you that what you are doing isn't really that important.

Keep moving forward and your eyes squarely on the goals you've set for yourself.  They are uniquely yours, no matter how large or how small, and no one can tell you they aren't important.

Even though I didn't stop and take that seat on my run yesterday, I will eventually make time to sit on those chairs by the lake and enjoy that spectacular view.

I'll consider it my reward for achieving the goals I set out for myself in spite of the obstacles in my path.

See you there?
