Cats Can Be Amazing Teachers

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I often wonder what goes through my cat's head when I am running around the apartment, trying to get everything done. Or what she actually hears when I am working at home and on a conference call, strategizing about a project or an issue we need to solve.

More often than not, on my work at home days, she (Firefly) chooses to lie on the table next to my laptop, usually right on top of the papers or notebook I need to be using.

All she has to do is exist. Sleep, eat, walk around the apartment like she owns the place, and that's about it.

Does she look at me working so hard and shake her head? Maybe wonder why I can't just sit still or stop to take a nap and enjoy the peaceful quiet of life?

I envy her, actually. For her simple life and the way she seems to never have a care in the world.

Cats have just a few simple rules that guide their days.

1. If you're tired, lay down and take a rest.

Literally, anywhere you are, just plop yourself down, close your eyes and go to sleep. It doesn't matter what's under you either, just lay right on top of it and get that nap in.

2. If you're hungry, ask for food until someone gives it to you.

Follow them around the house and meow at them the whole time. And don't forget to curl yourself around their ankles and attempt to trip them as they try to walk to the fridge.

3. If your people are sad, try to cheer them up.

Rub up against their leg and share a few of your hairs with them. That always helps. Or jump into their lap and nuzzle their neck until they have no choice but to pet you.

4. Appreciate the sunshine.

Find that sunbeam coming through the window and spend some time lying in it. Feel how warm and cozy it is. Marvel in the beauty of it.

5. Just be still and quiet.

There is no need to talk so much. Snuggle up and enjoy just being together. Purr loudly to show just how happy you are.

Pretty simple, right? But so important.

Pet lovers know that animals have a way of creating peace in our lives. Even now, as I write this, Firefly is cuddled up next to me, bringing me inspiration and helping me relax after a very long week.

I look at her and smile.

Cats can be amazing teachers.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn a few lessons from this one.
